How to Search Cases by Name
Colorado's free Judicial Branch Docket Search is organized around hearing events. It offers three ways in. Search an individual by first and last name. A business gets its own name mode. Attorneys can be found by name or Colorado bar number. Pick Jackson County and set a date window. Add at least one more filter, since the form requires something beyond dates alone.
- Choose the state Docket Search when the goal is a hearing date, appearance mode, courtroom, or hearing type.
- Select Jackson County and the right court type if known. Add a short date range that fits the likely hearing.
- Choose Individual, Business, Attorney Name, or Attorney Bar Number, then enter the matching fields.
- Compare every result by case number, court, caption, and hearing date. Similar names alone do not identify a case.
- Use the clerk's Register of Actions request when no hearing appears or when a full chronology is needed.
Jackson County Name Search Traps
A name-only search in Jackson County can pull back rows that fit more than one person or business. Before trusting a row, compare the court, class, year, caption, and event. A misspelled name or a narrow date window can bury a true match. Exported rows only save what was on screen. They prove nothing about identity. They also freeze data the court may later change.
Skip the guessing with an exact case number. That also avoids the $5 nonparty fee a clerk name search can carry. Call the Clerk of Court at 970-723-4363. Or visit the Jackson County Combined Court at 396 LaFever Street, Walden. Without a number, offer the likely year and case type. For town citations, contact the Walden Municipal Court Clerk at 970-723-4344.
Jackson County Case Search Fields
The official hearing search offers several search paths through its location and identity fields. No single field is required on its own. The page does ask for at least one filter beyond the date, so plan on adding a name, case number, or court. The dropdown options shown in the live interface go beyond what can be listed with confidence here.

The Judicial Branch Access Guide draws the line between case records and court administrative records. It also names the vendors authorized to supply data. That map tells you which door to knock on.
The distinction matters. The free hearing form, vendor data, the clerk's file, and an administrative-data request are simply not interchangeable.
How to Search by Case Number
A Colorado state case number breaks into three parts: filing year, case class, and sequence. The search form gives each part its own field. A number like 2026CV… means a 2026 civil case; 2025CR… means a 2025 criminal case. The state also uses DR for domestic relations, PR for probate, and T for traffic. Jackson County publishes no local sequence rule, so never invent the missing digits.
Copy every character straight from a notice, ticket, or court order. Then choose Jackson County and the right court type. The Jackson County trial-court page separates the two state calendars. District Court handles felony, unrestricted civil, domestic, probate, mental-health, and juvenile matters. County Court covers misdemeanor, state traffic, infraction, small-claims, and civil claims within its jurisdiction. A municipal number belongs to Walden Municipal Court. It may never resolve in the state search.
Note: A case number is the strongest search key. It works without clean spelling, uncommon names, or a paid clerk search.
Jackson County Case Number Codes
Those class letters offer a quick first check. They hint at the likely court and record path for a Jackson County case. They say nothing about the result. CR marks a criminal class, not a conviction. CV marks a civil filing, not a judgment. DR points to domestic relations. PR covers probate. T covers traffic. A Jackson County court docket may show other classes too, since the live interface offers more than these. Treat this list as a helpful starting point rather than a complete index.
- CR
- Criminal case class. Read charges separately from plea, dismissal, verdict, disposition, and sentence entries.
- CV
- Civil case class. The Register of Actions may index pleadings, motions, orders, and judgment activity.
- DR
- Domestic-relations class, where access to some documents may require redaction, identification, or authorization.
- PR
- Probate class handled as District Court work through the Combined Court clerk.
- T
- State traffic class generally associated with Jackson County Court rather than a Walden ordinance case.
A statewide request form flags one trap. Numbers bearing GV, GS, or D may belong to Denver County Court through its General Sessions formats, since Denver is separately administered. That clue can explain why a presumed Jackson County case lookup comes back empty.
What a Case Search Shows
A free Docket Search result is a scheduled event, nothing more. The entry shows the event date, start time, estimated duration, displayed name or caption, case number, hearing type, location, appearance type, and courtroom. Export Results, Printable Version, and pagination work only on the visible set. None of them turns the hearing list into the full official case file.
| Event Date | The day of the scheduled hearing, subject to later court action. |
|---|---|
| Start Time | The listed start for that event. |
| Duration | An estimated amount of calendar time. |
| Caption | The displayed party or case name used to identify the matter. |
| Case Number | The filing year, class, and sequence. |
| Hearing Type | The purpose, such as Motions Hearing, Status Conference, or Show Cause Hearing. |
| Location | The courthouse or court location for the event. |
| Appearance Type | IN PERSON, VIRTUAL, TELEPHONE, NO APPEARANCE REQUIRED, or blank. |
| Courtroom | A room number, letter, or virtual designation. |
The calendar result leaves plenty out. No pleading images, no full filing history, no detailed charge block, balances, attorney list, or final disposition. For those, turn to the Register of Actions and a document request.
Jackson County ROA and Documents
Colorado calls its chronological case index the Register of Actions, or ROA. It lists filings, charges, sentences, minute orders, hearings, dispositions, and post-judgment activity. But it is not the documents themselves. CoCourts, a vendor linked by the Judicial Branch, sells real-time ROA access. Keep in mind that vendor data is not a certified official record. It may omit protected content. The Colorado Courts Record Search through CoCourts shows this commercial layer in practice.
The online result tells you what happened; it rarely hands over the paper. Need certified copies? For a pleading, order, judgment, motion, ticket, or decree, go to the Jackson County Clerk of Court. Colorado's statewide Record/Document Request Form gathers the party names, case number, case type, filing year, and county. It also asks for the documents you want and whether you need certification. Absent extenuating circumstances, the court aims to respond within three business days.
Older files can sit off site. Call ahead, because retrieval may add real cost. Some historical holdings transfer to the Colorado State Archives instead. Ask the Combined Court which office holds the record before you mail anything.
County vs Statewide Case Search
Jackson County runs no county-level portal of its own for state cases. Your real choice sits among the statewide tools and the local clerk. Docket Search costs nothing and tracks court events. CoCourts sells real-time ROA access. For inspection, copies, certified documents, and help pinning down the right case number, the Jackson County Combined Court remains the authoritative source.
| Search Layer | What It Provides | Best Use |
|---|---|---|
| Colorado Docket Search | Free scheduled-event fields | Find a hearing date, courtroom, type, or appearance mode. |
| CoCourts | Commercial real-time ROA data | Review a case chronology when vendor access fits the need. |
| Combined Court Clerk | Official ROA, filed documents, inspection, and certification | Verify the file or obtain an authoritative copy. |
| Walden Municipal Clerk | Town ordinance and citation records | Search a municipal matter outside the state-court path. |
Colorado Courts E-Filing exists mainly for lawyers to file documents, not as a free public repository. Its paid case-history feature is not the clerk's certified file. Need only a Jackson County court date? Start with the free docket. Need the exact filed order? Start with a clerk request.
Jackson County Municipal Case Search
Town ordinance matters and municipal citations take a different path: Walden Municipal Court. The official town departments page lists its Town Clerk/Municipal Court Clerk. The office sits at 513 Harrison Street in Walden. It is reachable at 970-723-4344. The town's agenda archive may surface dated municipal court notices. It is not a search by party name, citation number, or full Register of Actions.
Read the citation first. It names the issuing court. If that court is the Town of Walden, call the municipal clerk. Do not assume CoCourts or the state Docket Search covers it. If it says Jackson County Court, take the state path. This check matters. A blank state result can look like proof no municipal case exists. It proves nothing of the sort.
Jackson County Federal Case Paths
Events happening inside Jackson County do not put a federal case in Jackson County District Court. Federal matters go to the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado. Others go to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Colorado. Both are reached through federal electronic access. PACER handles official registration and search. RECAP, from the nonprofit Free Law Project, gathers federal docket material users have shared. It is free of charge. The official PACER service is where any federal case locator and court access begins.
PACER searches federal records, not the Colorado state District or County Court docket.
Jackson County Federal Trial Search
The U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado is the federal trial-court source.
Its docket is separate from the Eighth Judicial District and Jackson County Combined Court.
Jackson County Bankruptcy Case Search
The U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Colorado maintains the bankruptcy court path.
Do not chase bankruptcy through the state hearing docket or the Walden municipal clerk; neither court handles those cases.
Jackson County Federal Docket Archive
The nonprofit RECAP archive shares federal docket documents free of charge.
A gap in RECAP is not a gap in the case. If a federal filing is missing there, check PACER or the originating federal court.
Jackson County No-Result Checks
An empty search result is not proof that no Jackson County case exists. Several innocent things cause blanks. The date window may cut off the next event. Or a hearing was reset or canceled. The spelling may not match the caption. Older cases may sit off site, and municipal citations stay in Walden's system. Restricted, suppressed, protected, sealed, juvenile, probate, and confidential content can also be withheld or redacted.
A blank screen is not a legal finding. Only the court can explain whether a record is outside the search window, stored elsewhere, corrected, or lawfully restricted.
Jackson County Clerk Search Fallback
Exhaust the easy fixes before asking staff for help. Widen the date range and confirm each part of the case number. Switch between party and attorney mode, and verify the court level. Still nothing? Call the Jackson County Combined Court clerk. Have only a name in hand? Offer the likely year, the case type, party details, and any prior number or hearing date.
Ask whether the file is on site. Ask whether a public terminal exists before you drive over. Clerk hours are limited, and older material may have moved off site or to the Colorado State Archives. Requests can go through the online Record/Document Request Form, fax 970-723-4337, mail at P.O. Box 308, Walden, CO 80480, or the counter. Name Jackson as the location, and say whether you want an ROA or a filed document. Town citations belong with the Walden municipal clerk, not the state vendor.
Restricted Cases and Access Rules
Chief Justice Directive 05-01 sets the access categories for Colorado court records. A sealed record is closed by statute, rule, or court order. Suppressed records go further. Only judges, court staff, the parties, their counsel, and other authorized personnel may see them. A court order can open the door. A protected record turns public just after the required redactions are made. Certain criminal cases defined by law are restricted outright.
Juvenile and adoption files sit near the top of the controlled list. So do presentence reports. So do medical and mental-health details, paternity test results, financial affidavits, some support records, select exhibits, and personal identifiers. The request form itself carries a warning. Suppressed cases, juvenile or probate records, and protected documents may demand government photo identification. Showing ID proves who you are, nothing more. It cannot lift a court order or any other legal limit on the docket.
Sealing does not shred the file, and lawful government access can continue. A public custodian answers only as the sealing order permits. An empty docket search is not proof that a case was sealed or never existed. Denied by the clerk? Ask for the legal basis and any procedure for requesting access. When a hearing belongs to a case you can view, the Jackson County court dates page helps confirm the event details. It never substitutes for the case file itself.
